Slow Cooked Chicken and Gravy

Slow-cooked chicken and gravy is a comforting and flavorful dish that’s easy to prepare. Here’s a simple recipe for slow-cooked chicken with gravy:

Ingredients:

  • 4-6 boneless, skinless chicken thighs
  • 1 onion, finely chopped
  • 2 cloves garlic, minced
  • 1 cup chicken broth
  • 1/2 cup dry white wine (optional)
  • 1 teaspoon dried thyme
  • 1 teaspoon dried rosemary
  • Salt and pepper to taste
  • 1/4 cup all-purpose flour
  • 1/4 cup unsalted butter
  • 1 cup whole milk or heavy cream

Instructions:

  1. Season and Brown the Chicken:
    • Season the chicken thighs with salt and pepper.
    • In a skillet over medium-high heat, add a bit of oil. Brown the chicken thighs on both sides until they have a nice golden color. This step is to sear the chicken and develop flavor.
  2. Saute Onions and Garlic:
    • In the same skillet, add chopped onions and garlic. Saute until they become translucent.
  3. Deglaze the Pan:
    • Pour in the chicken broth and white wine (if using), scraping the bottom of the skillet to loosen any browned bits. Let it simmer for a couple of minutes.
  4. Transfer to Slow Cooker:
    • Transfer the browned chicken, onions, garlic, and deglazing liquid to the slow cooker.
  5. Add Herbs:
    • Sprinkle dried thyme and rosemary over the chicken.
  6. Cook on Low:
    • Cover the slow cooker and cook on low for 4-6 hours, or until the chicken is tender and cooked through.
  7. Make the Gravy:
    • In the last 30 minutes of cooking, melt butter in a saucepan over medium heat. Stir in the flour to create a roux. Cook for a few minutes until the roux is golden brown.
  8. Add Milk or Cream:
    • Gradually whisk in the milk or heavy cream, ensuring there are no lumps. Continue to cook and stir until the gravy thickens.
  9. Combine with Chicken:
    • Pour the prepared gravy into the slow cooker with the chicken. Gently stir to combine.
  10. Serve:
    • Once the chicken is cooked and the gravy is well combined, taste and adjust the seasoning if needed.
    • Serve the slow-cooked chicken and gravy over rice, mashed potatoes, or with your favorite side dishes.
